Leaving the Evangelical Church
Dearest J,
I go to an evangelical fundamentalist / protestant church near me. However, I was sitting there and service and it dawned on me … I think it’s time to leave.
I don’t agree with the principles with which they discuss. Their idea of the “Roman’s Road” way of saving people doesn’t make sense to me.
I watched Howard Thurman’s biography on YouTube (below) which was so incredible. I also read his book, “Jesus and the Disinherited” and I think — I truly understand this man’s philosophy. He also was the dean of BU! And was Martin Luther King Jr’s pastor. Howard Thurman talked to trees, he found God in nature. And sometimes I agree, because I feel more of God outside than I do at the church I go to, unreal, I know.
Required reading from my monastic order is what I understand better than protestant evangelical Christianity. SOOO with that, I figured … it may be time to LEAVE.
In 2 weeks they’re doing baptisms. Next week we’re still working through Revelation, which COULD be interesting, but I’m kind of done.
I go because it’s something to do, and it’s good to be around community. But every single week, I don’t feel comfortable or “get” what they’re even talking about.
So, yeah. It’s time to STOP GOING and figure something else out!
I considered going to a Quaker church, but there’s nothing in person in my area. I even though of going to a Zen Buddhist sanctuary, but that too is not really “right”. I thought of just teaching ACIM, but even then, I don’t know the point.
So I’ve come around to the idea again of just letting religion and spirituality go for a second. Spirituality can be in my life, but perhaps it needn’t have a blog, or discussion, or understanding. Maybe it’s time to just wrap it all up and maybe go travel, or just enjoy life, or do something else with my life.
NOT SURE!
